Education Assistance

Delivery of assistance by Financial Manager of PT. Odira Mr. Sutiana in form of uniform to students and teachers of SMA SR Bekasi (Senior High School of SR Bekasi) in Belendung region, Kedung Pengawas village, Babelan sub district, district of Bekasi.

Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is the form of social care bestowed to the surrounding of environment. One of the CSR activities of       PT Odira Energy Persada (PT Odira) is in the sector of education that is to provide education fund for the students especially for the children of the less fortunate family, aiming to improve and broaden community’s opportunity to attend school and continue their study to the higher level.

This program also participates in supporting the regional government in sector of education because of the condition of the 9 year compulsory study program in the Bekasi district that is still not running well. The Regional government itself still have limited fund in financing the development sector including the education sector. The members of the Bekasi District Regional Parliament, Widodo, said that up till now most of the people in the Bekasi District can only afford schooling until the grade 8 or the 2nd grade of Junior High School or the similar level. As a result there are still many dropped out school-age children because of their parents’ meager income.

Mr. Farouk Rais, the President Director of PT Odira, said that as the company that perform explorations profit in the area of Bekasi District he did realize that it is very valuable to help the people in Bekasi district through the education sector. Accordingly, PT Odira has distributed CSR fund in partnership with the Sekolah Rakyat (SR) Bekasi (School of Bekasi People) to endow with education service for those poor school-aged children who cannot attend school (“Indo Pos” newspaper, May 2, 2008, page 19).

The Sekolah Rakyat (SR) Bekasi is the foundation that manages the education program to participate and care for the education issues in the area of Bekasi mainly for those unfortunate school-aged children in coping with the social economics, transportation, and geographical condition issues or sometimes they have to spend much of their time in helping their parents to make ends meet. Apparently, it is not possible for those children to attend the normal classes at the regular basis Junior High School. Currently, there are about 2300 students scattered in 17 sub district towns in Bekasi who have been benefited from the charity program that allow them to enjoy the gratis education program in SR Bekasi.

This program really benefited those people, regional government and company itself. As for the people, now they are able to improve and extend the opportunity to attend school and even continue their study to the higher level, as for the regional government this program has significantly accomplisher their program on the 9 year compulsory education program and for   PT Odira itself, this charity program hopefully may bring positive contribution as they can receive support from the local community and regional government and can enhance the company image among the stakeholders.
